An online petition is now available here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/preservemdc

Click here to view/print the Mount petition
Set printer settings to: Print Range Pages 1 to 1 (because page 2 is blank)
There are spaces for 20 signatures per page; so print as many as you need/would like
Once you’ve collected as many signatures as you can, you can mail the petitions to:
Preserve The Mount
PO Box 2197
Wheeling, WV 26003
You can gather signatures no matter what US state or world country you’re in!
Use the “Contact Us” form in the left sidebar for assistance if the cost of printing/Xeroxing/snail mailing is a concern. We’ll work something out.
Thank you!
ETA: This may sound a little nutty, but if you are located outside of Wheeling, please consider printing one page of the petition to sign yourself. As I understand it, physical petitions are taken more seriously than online ones. Don’t forget to use the “Contact Us” form in the left sidebar to get the snail mail address to which you’ll mail the petition. Please DO NOT mail it to the Mount itself. And it’s perfectly fine if yours is the only signature on the page, but if you can get family and friends to sign as well that would be wonderful.
ETA more: If you are printing more than one page and are concerned about the trees, don’t forget the option of printing front and back.
ETA even more: See also Mount petition cover sheet

Sure hope this helps. Is there someone at Wheeling Hospital to talk to concerning their plans?
Jeremy Morris of Wheeling National Heritage suggested the hospital board. I’m not sure yet of where to write them, but I’m trying to find out. The hospital’s address, though is:
1 Medical Park
Wheeling, WV 26003
From my understanding, the hospital board is made up of men from Pittsburgh, Pa., who have no attachment to Wheeling’s national heritage. It is my understanding that endowment monies are available even during these hard times for efforts such as this. At the risk of sounding very radical, I believe something else is at play here. I believe that the recent unexpected firing of Wheeling Jesuit University’s president was tied into Wheeling Hospital’s plans. Why? Because the president sided with the nun’s original desire and intention of keeping the building as a living legacy. The hospital had competing interests in the property and may have been influential in having the president of the school fired.
Janet, that makes a lot of very discouraging sense.
It’s a shame.
Less than two years ago, there was a plan to incorporate WJU and the Mount: http://theintelligencer.net/page/content.detail/id/512124.html?startIndex=26#membercmts512124
I am the only one in this area and was wondering if there is a way to do the e-signature like our Politicians do thus makeing it easier for one and all to sign and not have to print and mail.. Sincerely, Paige Fair Munday
Paige, did you see this? Online petition here, thanks to Troy M.: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/preservemdc
Paige,
Yes, I understand that Jo is working with someone on getting an e-petition up and going. I’ll let you know the details as soon as I have them.

As the parent of a student who started in pre-school in 1986 and graduated from the Mount in 2002, I feel sure that I have seen most of the buildings and grounds. Sure, there are some places that need renovation (where the boarding students used to stay comes immediately to mind) but overall, the structure is in remarkably good shape. It was well cared for and always spotlessly clean. Some of it is practically new–the tennis courts, the gym, the music hall, the residence that was constructed for the sisters. It makes no sense to tear down such a beautiful and historic structure. It makes much more sense to renovate, especially with an eye toward lowering utility costs.
I am encouraged to see the support for our dear MdeC. PLEASE: post this website on your Twitter and/or facebook postings/tweets. Let your friends, family and other associates know about signing the online petition and if you are able make a donation, please. We cannot let this bellum treasure which has been a light to so many be demolished. Love to all, leigh
I CAN’T BELIEVE A DESTRUCTION OF THIS MAGNITUDE, SPECIALLY,
BECAUSE OF THE HISTORY AND ITS BEAUTY COULD TAKE PLACE IN A COUNTRY WITH SO ,SO,SO, MUCH AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING HISTORY !!
WHY WORRY ABOUT THE WORLD WARMING AND PAPER USE AND WASTE AND ANIMAL RIGHTS IF DESTRUCTION IS THE ONLY WAY IN THIS CASE??
I AM IN SHOCK, I HAD NOT HEARD OF THE DEMOLITION BEFORE TODAY!!
THINGS CHANGE SO QUICKLY, WHO KNOWS IF WHEELING WOULD TURN AROUND AGAIN?
WHO IS SELLING? WHY THE STATE AND CHURCH DON’T TAKE A STAND?
SORRY I CAME INTO THIS HORRIFIC NEWS ONLY TODAY AND I DON’T KNOW DETAILS.
I SERIOUSLY HOPE WITH ALL MY HEART THAT MOUNT DE CHANTAL, SHOULD BE PRESERVE.
I ATTENDED THE MOUNT FOR 3 YEARS AS A FOREIGN STUDENT FROM PANAMA.
I DIDN’T SPEAK,WROTE OR UNDERSTOOD ENGLISH WHEN MY PARENTS TOOK ME THERE, AND I SPENT SOME OF THE THREE MOST MEMORABLE YEARS OF MY LIFE!!
WITH MY BEST WISHES FOR A GOOD ARRANGEMENT,
AIDA PAREDES DE CARDOZE CLASS OF 1963
What I have admired about Wheeling and West Virginia is the history ,the preservation and reuse of old buildings . Buildings that can not be dulpicated today. A building such as The Mount that holds so much historic significant, beauty and possibilities that it would even be considered for demolition. What is Wheeling Hospital thinking?
Why demonlition of this building that for the most, a helathy structure? None of this makes sense to me. In Wheeling many are talented to repair what needs repaired & honor this beautiful building. Is any one listening to Dr. Emory Kemp, teh expert who can lad this preservation.
Sincerely,
Rosalie (GOLCH) Schoenfeld
from Mosart where I grew up!
